Sage Canyon Elementary is proud to be a part of Colorado's Douglas County School District, where parents are provided the opportunity to choose the educational environment and programming that best meets their child's needs. The mission of Sage Canyon is to foster a supportive and challenging school community that fuels a contagious spark for learning and recognizes students as unique individuals. Here at Sage Canyon, we use a Project Based Learning approach to create a solid foundation of fundamental and higher order thinking skills through structured curriculum that is consistent and aligned throughout the grade levels. Project Based Learning (PBL) is a dynamic approach to teaching in which students explore real-world problems and challenges, simultaneously developing cross-curriculum skills while working in small collaborative groups. Because project-based learning is filled with active and engaged learning, it inspires students to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they're studying. Research also indicates that students are more likely to retain the knowledge gained through this approach far more than through traditional textbook-centered learning. In addition, students develop confidence and self-direction as they move through both team-based and independent work. 

School Hours- 9:00 a.m - 4:00 p.m

*Cohorts will meet their teacher at the assigned
 area outside, no earlier than 8:55am. They will follow their teacher and class into the school at 9:10, through their designated entrance. If your student arrives after 9:10am, they will need to go through the main doors and will be marked tardy.

Hi Parents,

It’s been so wonderful to have kids back in the building.  We know it may feel different, but we are so thankful to be back.  As I mentioned before, we are trying some new systems out, and we wanted to take a moment to clarify a few arrival and dismissal procedures.  

At arrival, we are only using the FRONT kiss and go lane for drop off.  If your child is scheduled to meet their class on the blacktop or back bus loop, please drop them off in the front loop or walk them down to the black top or back loop on the designated paths around Sage. Again, please do not use the back loop for arrival.  Also, please do not park in the parking lot in the back, as this is reserved for our staff as well as our students with special needs who are being dropped off.  

At dismissal, we will use the back loop for our 1st, 2nd and 5th graders in order to help maintain social distancing.  Please DO NOT PARK on the right side of Desert Ridge so that cars can line up to come in, and please watch for our staff to direct traffic into the bus loop. Again, please use the designated paths throughout Sage to walk.

I realize that these are all changes to previous years, but we are making them for the safety of children, and we appreciate your grace and patience.  

I will copy all of the arrival and departure procedures at the bottom of this email.  Please take the time to read them thoroughly.

THERE WILL BE NO SUPERVISION BEFORE 8:55.  Please do not drop your child off prior to this time. We are only utilizing the front loop for drop off.   

We will be utilizing all doors in order to socially distance and enter the building.  Please see below for specifics on your child’s grade.  

*Kindergarten-Students can go directly to their teacher’s exterior door.  

*1st Grade-Students will meet their teacher on the blacktop and enter through the staff parking lot door.  

*2nd Grade-Students will meet their teacher by the back bus loop doors and enter through the bus loop doors. 2nd grade students ONLY may be dropped off at the front and walk through the building to get to the back bus loop. 

*3rd Grade- Students will meet their teacher on the blacktop and enter through the recess door.  

*4th Grade-Students will meet their teacher near the front door and enter through the front door.

*5th Grade- Students will meet their teacher on the blacktop and enter through the staff parking lot door after first grade has entered.  

All these doors will be open and monitored until 9:10.  At that time, students will need to come to the front door to be let in.


For dismissal, we are going to use both the front and the back loops in order to distance by grade level.  

If your child’s grade level has been designated to the back lot, please look for staff to direct you through the back loop, behind the buses. No parking on Desert Ridge, as this will now be used for through traffic for the back loop.  Again, please use the designated paths throughout Sage to walk.

*Kindergarten, 3rd grade and 4th grade will be picked up at the front kiss and go loop.  

*1st grade, 2nd grade and 5th grade will be picked up at the back kiss and go loop (or the bus loop). 

If you have multiple children, please make a family decision as to where they will be picked up.  Either meet each other at the front or back and have a designated meeting spot to wait for their ride.


The only parents that we are going to be able to accommodate to walk into the kiss and go areas are Kindergarten.  If you are walking to pick up your child, please designate a place to meet up that is not in front or the back of the school.  This could be Wrangler Park or the black top.  We encourage you to practice this before your orientation day so your student knows where to meet you as well.  PLEASE do not choose a spot where we are dismissing students. We will not be able to maintain social distancing if that is the case. Walkers in first and second grade, please communicate with your teacher where your spot will be so that we can help reinforce if that gets forgotten.


Hello Kindergarten Families,

Welcome to Sage Canyon! We are so excited to start this year with you. We would like to welcome you to Balanced Beginnings on Monday, August 17th and Tuesday, August 18th. Kindergarten students will be broken up into 4 different groups to ensure proper social distancing. The groups will run as follows:

Monday morning- 9:00 AM-11:00 AM (COHORT A1) 

Last name ending in A-E, your student will go to door D.
Last name ending in G-S, your student will go to door B.

Monday afternoon- 1:00 PM-3:00 PM (COHORT A2) 

All students will go to door C.

Tuesday morning- 9:00 AM-11:00 AM (COHORT B1) 

Last name ending in B-K, your student will go to door B.

Last name ending in M-Z, your student will go to door D.

Tuesday afternoon- 1:00 PM-3:00 PM (COHORT B2)

Last name ending in B-M, your student will go to door C.
Last name ending in O-W, your student will go to door D.

*Please pick up your child at the door you dropped them off at*

Upon arrival, students will enter through the kindergarten doors at the front of the building. 

As a school, we are following the district’s safety protocols which include:

  • Temperature check prior to arrival (must be lower than 100.0)
  • Masks worn at all times
  • Frequent hand-washing
  • Social distancing

Please do not send your kindergartener with any backpacks, supplies, or personal belongings. We will be providing each student with disposable water bottles for Balanced Beginnings.

Following Balanced Beginnings, you will receive an email from your child’s teacher by the end of the school day on Friday, August 21st.
